Cheap Thrills @ Goodwill

I confess. I’m a thrift store junkie. Goodwill has kind of become my Walmart. I can often find things made better and for far cheaper than the Chinese junk Walmart is peddling these days. As a working mom, I don’t always have time to stop for yard sales, especially on the weekends with small kids in car seats. But I can always slip away to the Goodwill and other thrift stores over my lunch hour to scout out good deals. And I can do it year round, which I love. Yes, the prices are higher than garage sales, but I spend a lot less time and gas finding things at the local thrift stores. For some reason, this area of central Illinois has some great thrift stores which are well organized and make you feel like you’re shopping in a boutique! What’s not to love about that?

I was really excited to get the exact same model coffee maker I've used for over ten years. I love this model, and we literally wore out the last one. These sell for $70 used on Amazon, about $30 on eBay, and similar new models are well over $100. $2.99 was steal! And it works! And it still has the stickers on it!

My trip yesterday turned up some really great deals that I just had to share. I spent $23 and bought the following:

1 Whirlypop stovetop popcorn popper @1.99
4 Fiesta-ware bowls @ 2.99 ea
1 collapsible grill wok @ 2.99
1 Cuisinart Grind & Brew Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe @ 2.99
1 huge hardback cookbook: Cookwise: The Secrets to Cooking Revealed @ 1.99

I saved 5% with my discount card (our area has them) and donated most of it back to charity. What a great trip! This is why I love shopping the thrift stores. It really is a cheap thrill for me!

This week's deals were really good!

I didn't think $2.99 was bad for fiesta ware. Seems like the individual pieces and the sets go for way more than that.

This cookbook looks promising and is in new condition. It sells used for $10 on Amazon.

This cookbook looks promising and is in new condition. It was $30 when it came out and sells used for $10 on Amazon. Hopefully I’ll learn some more “recipe secrets”!
