Meals & Deals: Week of 6/21/2015

Here are the meals I’ve got planned, along with my shopping trip. It’s a less ambitious plan than my last one. I made a lot of the recipes last week, but there were a few that I forgot about. I’ll save them for later, since they’d been rescheduled a couple of times. If they don’t show up on my radar, I must not be that excited to actually make them. That’s ok. Ideas and reality are rarely the same. I’ve found staying flexible helps. I did manage to get quite a few recipes posted online, which I was happy about. I’m still adding as many as I can every week, on top of everything else. Slowly but surely!

I must be crazy or hungry, because there are a LOT of recipes on this week’s plan, particularly new recipes to try. I’m not sure I’ll get to them all, which is ok. If I can’t, then sometimes I roll them over to the next week. We do have certain meals we love to eat over and over again, so those are fairly easy and familiar. I try to plan those kind during the work week and try new main dish recipes on the weekend. Dinner time is already crazy enough! Continue reading →

Meals & Deals: Week of 6/7/2015

Meal Plan:
I had more elaborate plans for the week, but have been kicking my own butt in the garden and doing a lot of spring cleaning lately. So much has piled up and there’s so little time some days. I could barely move after all the exertion, so I’ve kept most of the meals simple this week. I’m pretty sure I’ll have some kind of revolt if I serve chicken too many more days in a row! I was so busy I didn’t even get to the store until today, so we winged it a bit.

I ate lunch out the other day. BIG mistake. I can’t seem to handle most processed foods any more. Back to packing my lunches! My teen is doing summer classes, so we needed easy grab and go stuff he could take for quick breakfasts and lunches too.

Meals: Week of 6/30/2015

Last week, I posted my shopping trips to Kroger and Aldi, and promised to show you how I fit these things into my meal planning. I work full time and try to cook healthy, low cost food (mostly from scratch), with two small kids, a ravenous teenager and an equally hungry husband. Things can get a little crazy sometimes. I also try to plan around what’s in season, what’s on sale, and what I have on hand. That’s a lot to keep track of!

So I use this wonderful online tool called PlantoEat.com. It’s subscription based- about $29 a year. I got it for half price during their Black Friday sale last year and bought an extra one for my mom as a birthday gift. She’s not as tech-savvy as me, so I’m not sure how much she’s used it, but I love it! I will be writing a full review of it soon. You can find me on there as FrugalMoms2. Add me as a friend!

Plan to eat

PlantoEat has a free, full 30 day trial. I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love with it. I know I did. It’s very easy to use and very visual. You can add recipes from anywhere, even Frugal Moms2! And it works across all devices- phones, tablets, and computers.

Anyhow, here is the meal plan I created in PlantoEat for the week, along with links to recipes I’m trying or favorites that seem to get made a lot. I try to follow the plan about 80% of the time. Sometimes things come up or I have to rearrange nights. It’s so nice knowing I have the “stuff” to make all the recipes, regardless of when I do them.

The colored blocks are recipes in my personal PlantoEat recipe book (I’ve put links to all of the original recipes below). Each color represents a different meal time. White blocks are notes and entries I didn’t need a recipe for. You’ll notice a lot of repeats. I will make things in bulk and eat them for a few days straight. I’ll make double batches of smoothies, triple batches of breakfasts, etc. to cut down on prep time. If I  like it, I don’t mind eating it more than once.

Cheap Thrills: Grocery Deals This Week

My haul this week!

My haul this week!

I finally got a chance to hit the grocery store today and stock up on a few things. Money has been tight lately as life continues to be crazy. Thank God we’re frugal! Last week we had a whopping $35 for groceries and we ate mostly from the pantry, fridge and freezer. This week we’re playing catch up. I wanted to spend $100, but ended up spending $157 on 69 items and caught some very good deals at Kroger and Aldi. This trip included plenty of meat, dairy, fruits and veggies. I was able to sneak in some on sale potato chips (a luxury here!) and crackers for the little guys. I also got some ramen and sugar free flavored water for the teenager, since he likes to snack on it and it’s summer time, so he’ll be eating anything that’s not nailed down.
