Ah, baby steps. Do you remember them from the movie “What About Bob”?

Bill Murray plays Bob, a dependent mental health patient who stalks his egotistical psychiatrist (Richard Dreyfuss) down on vacation because he couldn’t get through even a couple of days without him. The psychiatrist had written a new book about “baby steps” that he gave to Bob to try to get rid of him. Instead, Bob uses the book to overcome his fears and drive his psychiatrist crazy! The “Someday” Garden

The glories of summer are often just a memory in the depths of winter here.

Winters are long in the Midwest. Too long, really. The bad weather starts in November and doesn’t truly let up until April. Six months of blahh. Even though I’ve lived in Illinois for 24 years, I’ve never gotten used to it. I’m originally from Virginia, and my internal clock seems to still be set on their time. I’m used to the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festivals in March! The only blossoms to be found here are crocuses poking their sleepy heads up through the snow.

So I spend my winters enraptured in seed catalogs, nursing droopy houseplants, and pining for green things. And I dream about my how much better my garden is going to be “this time”.

I make plans. Oh boy, do I make plans. And this year, I made some big ones. The entire garden layout needed to change, because even though I loved the methods we were using, they just weren’t working for us.

Gardening Review: Burgess Seed and Plant Company


If you do a search for reviews on Burgess Seed and Plant Company, chances are that most of them you find will be negative. There are some people who have good experiences with them and many who don’t. Personally, I have very mixed feelings about Burgess.

My Order

I took a chance on ordering from this company because their prices were attractive and they were located about an hour south of me in Bloomington, IL. Most people were complaining about the condition the plants arrived in. I figured the problem must be with shipping, but I was close by so it should be ok. And they are affiliated with a very reputable nursery in Bloomington. How bad could it be?

Very bad. Oh, so very very bad…
