Meals & Deals: Week of 6/21/2015

Here are the meals I’ve got planned, along with my shopping trip. It’s a less ambitious plan than my last one. I made a lot of the recipes last week, but there were a few that I forgot about. I’ll save them for later, since they’d been rescheduled a couple of times. If they don’t show up on my radar, I must not be that excited to actually make them. That’s ok. Ideas and reality are rarely the same. I’ve found staying flexible helps. I did manage to get quite a few recipes posted online, which I was happy about. I’m still adding as many as I can every week, on top of everything else. Slowly but surely!

Cheap Thrills @ Goodwill Part 2

Houston, we have a problem….

After finding my great deals yesterday, I had to sleep with the fact that there was an amazing array of Fiesta-ware still sitting on the shelf in Goodwill, calling out to me. “Kim, buy us! Take us home!”

So I found myself back today. Somehow my car drove there all by itself….

These gorgeous vintage Fiestaware dishes kind of climbed in my cart and found their way home...

Cheap Thrills @ Goodwill

I confess. I’m a thrift store junkie. Goodwill has kind of become my Walmart. I can often find things made better and for far cheaper than the Chinese junk Walmart is peddling these days. As a working mom, I don’t always have time to stop for yard sales, especially on the weekends with small kids in car seats. But I can always slip away to the Goodwill and other thrift stores over my lunch hour to scout out good deals. And I can do it year round, which I love. Yes, the prices are higher than garage sales, but I spend a lot less time and gas finding things at the local thrift stores. For some reason, this area of central Illinois has some great thrift stores which are well organized and make you feel like you’re shopping in a boutique! What’s not to love about that?

I was really excited to get the exact same model coffee maker I've used for over ten years. I love this model, and we literally wore out the last one. These sell for $70 used on Amazon, about $30 on eBay, and similar new models are well over $100. $2.99 was steal! And it works! And it still has the stickers on it!

I must be crazy or hungry, because there are a LOT of recipes on this week’s plan, particularly new recipes to try. I’m not sure I’ll get to them all, which is ok. If I can’t, then sometimes I roll them over to the next week. We do have certain meals we love to eat over and over again, so those are fairly easy and familiar. I try to plan those kind during the work week and try new main dish recipes on the weekend. Dinner time is already crazy enough! Continue reading →

Meals & Deals: Week of 6/7/2015

Meal Plan:
I had more elaborate plans for the week, but have been kicking my own butt in the garden and doing a lot of spring cleaning lately. So much has piled up and there’s so little time some days. I could barely move after all the exertion, so I’ve kept most of the meals simple this week. I’m pretty sure I’ll have some kind of revolt if I serve chicken too many more days in a row! I was so busy I didn’t even get to the store until today, so we winged it a bit.

I ate lunch out the other day. BIG mistake. I can’t seem to handle most processed foods any more. Back to packing my lunches! My teen is doing summer classes, so we needed easy grab and go stuff he could take for quick breakfasts and lunches too.
